I don’t teach long classes in the summer—it just irks the student in me. Summers should feel a little freer. Plus everyone’s on vacation. But I will be teaching a few shorties, coming up.

One I’m MOST excited about is this day of speed-prompts where writers get to write in Andy Warhol’s Silver Clouds exhibit, which is coming to the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC in June!

Spend two hours with a guide offering brief readings and exercises designed to spark original new material, via solo and interactive freewriting.

I’m also doing this 10-week mentorship program via UCLA Extension, only taking on 2 students. There’s more about that here but let me know if you have any questions. If you are working on a longform piece or a book, this could be a good place to start. This one is all online, asynchronous + zoom meetings.

This fall I’m teaching a class on writing about animals (locally) as well as a flash/micro-nonfiction class (online). More on that later!

Friday Focus & Flow

Now for the writing prompt. It starts with a mini essay.

Disruption

This time we’d been apart for a few months. He had written me a letter, apologizing for hitting me, for not showing up to court, for losing the apartment, for being an alcoholic. But here he was at the back door of my new home, where I was a live-in nanny. The parents were out for the night; the kids were in bed. My best friend Pam and I had been eating popcorn and watching TV in the basement when I heard the knock. Who would be knocking on the back door of this suburban home at 10 pm?
